Couple-friendly hotels in Mumbai, and where to actually find them

Mumbai is one of the more relaxed cities in the country for couples. It is also one of the priciest, and the couple-friendly rooms cluster in particular pockets, mostly the airport belt, not the postcard South Mumbai. Here is the map.

The short version

  • Mumbai is cosmopolitan and relatively easy for couples, but room rates run higher than most Indian metros.
  • The deepest, safest inventory is the airport and Andheri belt, plus Bandra, Powai, Thane and Navi Mumbai.
  • South Mumbai and Colaba are thin for couple-friendly budget stays. Do not plan around them.
  • It is legal to share a room. Filter for “Accepts Local ID,” and treat OYO with a little caution (see below).

The short answer

Of the big metros, Mumbai is among the easier places to book as an unmarried couple. The city is used to people living their own lives, and the booking platforms carry plenty of couple-friendly rooms. The two things to know are that it costs more here than elsewhere, and the supply is not where tourists expect it. You will find the rooms out near the airport and the suburbs, not down in Colaba.

Where the rooms actually are

This is the part that saves you time. Couple-friendly inventory concentrates in a handful of areas, and they are mostly the business-hotel zones where flexible check-in is routine:

  • Andheri (East and West), near the airport: the deepest pool, and the most couple-habituated. Start here.
  • Bandra and Khar: cosmopolitan, a bit more upmarket.
  • Powai, Malad, Goregaon: solid mid-range supply in the suburbs.
  • Thane and Navi Mumbai (Vashi): the most affordable end.

What you will not find easily is cheap couple-friendly inventory in South Mumbai or Colaba. The tourist core is sparse for this, so do not build a plan around it.

Stays listed as couple-friendly

A shortlist from the platforms’ own couple-friendly Mumbai pages (checked June 2026). We have not stayed at or verified these, and listings move, so confirm on the platform first. The one marked on two sites is the safest bet, and several are chains (Bloom, Bawa, Iconiqa) you will see across multiple platforms.

The local-ID tip

The one thing to actually check: not every couple-friendly listing accepts a localID. A Mumbai couple with two Maharashtra IDs can still be refused at a hotel that is otherwise “couple-friendly.” The platforms tag this, so filter for “Accepts Local ID” and you sidestep the problem. Any government photo ID works, and no marriage proof is ever required.

A word on OYO

OYO is fine, with a caveat

OYO still runs a “welcomes couples” page and a Relationship Mode in its app. But since a 2025 policy change, individual OYO partner hotels can ask for proof of relationship or decline couples at their discretion. It is not a ban, and Mumbai is not singled out, but it means OYO is less of a sure thing than Brevistay, Bag2Bag or StayUncle, which state a cleaner all-couples-welcome position. If you book OYO, confirm with the specific property first.

For peace of mind: it is not a crime for an unmarried couple to share a hotel room in India. The Madras High Court has observed there is no law against it, and the Supreme Court has been clear that live-in relationships are neither a crime nor a sin. A refusal at the desk is policy, not law.

Mumbai is low-risk in practice, but worth one honest note. Back in 2015, police raided some lodges out at Madh Island and Aksa and detained adult couples, which caused a public outcry and an official inquiry at the time. That was a decade ago, it was widely condemned, and it does not reflect how the city works now. Carry your ID, book a couple-friendly room, and you are on solid ground.

Booking it well

Four quick habits

  • Aim for the airport / Andheri belt first. Deepest supply, least fuss.
  • Filter for “Accepts Local ID” if you are a Maharashtra couple.
  • Book through a couple-friendly platform, and check whether it is pay-at-hotel or prepaid.
  • Carry original government photo IDs for both, and match the booking to whoever checks in.

Common questions

Is it legal for an unmarried couple to stay in a Mumbai hotel?

Yes. No law prohibits two adults sharing a room. A refusal is the hotel’s own policy.

Where should we look first?

The airport and Andheri belt, then Bandra, Powai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. Skip South Mumbai for budget couple stays, it is thin.

Why is OYO flagged with a caveat?

Since 2025, OYO partner hotels can ask for relationship proof or decline at their discretion. It still lists couple rooms, just confirm with the specific property. Brevistay, Bag2Bag and StayUncle are cleaner on this.

Is Mumbai expensive for this?

Pricier than most metros, yes, even hourly. The flip side is plenty of choice in the suburbs once you know where to look.
