Editorial & sourcing policy
How we research, write, review and correct what you read here, and how we keep it independent.
Our promise in one line
What we are, and what we are not
UnmarriedCouple.com is an independent publisher of general legal information for unmarried couples in South Africa. We are not a law firm, we do not give legal advice, and reading the site does not create an attorney-client relationship. Our job is to explain the law clearly and point you to the sources; for advice on your situation, you need a qualified attorney.
How we source
- We build each guide from primary sources: legislation, reported court judgments, and official government information.
- Key cases and statutes are cited and linked at the foot of every guide, so you can read the original yourself.
- Where the law is unsettled or changing, we say so plainly rather than overstating certainty.
Who writes it
Our guides are produced and reviewed by the UnmarriedCouple.com editorial team against those primary sources. We publish under our brand rather than individual bylines because accountability for accuracy sits with the organisation as a whole. Drafting may be assisted by software tools, but every guide is fact-checked against the cited sources before it is published, and we take responsibility for what appears here.
Accuracy and corrections
The law changes, and we can make mistakes. If you find an error, email our team with the detail and we will check it against the source and fix it promptly. Guides show when they were last reviewed.
Independence, advertising and affiliates
The site is free to read. We fund it with advertising and, on some pages, affiliate links to services we think are genuinely useful. We may earn a commission if you use them. None of this changes our analysis or which option we recommend, and we will tell you when a free or cheaper route is the better answer.
